Game Of Thrones actress Carice Van Houten fiercely defended the series showrunner from fans who were left fuming over the season 8 finale.

The Westeros fantasy series ended a year ago and still the bitter feeling over how the epic ended rages on among long-held fans.

Showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss have come under fire for some of the show’s last minute choices which seemingly flipped previous character development on its head.

In fact, a massive petition demanding the final season be rewritten to fans liking has now passed more than 1.8million signatures

But Carice, who played Melisandre, is not having that.

Speaking to Insider, Carice said: ‘That’s beyond fandom. That’s extremism. That’s scary.

‘Knowing the writers and knowing how f***ing great they are, they don’t deserve that.’

After a fight for the Iron Throne, the eventual King was chosen by a show of hands rather than battle, after Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) put forward a proposal for Bran to lead the world.

Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) was seen transforming from merciful and dutiful queen to one full of rage as she burned down a city in a bid for power, and the unshakeable Cersei (Lena Heady) was seen being crushed under rubble.

It proved to be one of the most divisive and panned endings ever, with megafans claiming the finale ruined the show’s legacy as a whole.

Carice’s defence comes after she slammed fans for being ungrateful for the efforts made by the fans.

‘The fact that some people were so disappointed is because everything before that was so good. So it feels a bit ungrateful,’ she said.

‘You’ve had such great times and then yeah, you’re going to be disappointed because it’s not going to go exactly how you anticipated.’

Game Of Thrones is available for Sky On Demand.
