However many of his fans would struggle to identify the Clydebank-born favourite in this still from 1969 war epic Battle of Britain.

He played a character called Jamie alongside an all-star cast list which included industry icons like Michael Caine, Laurence Olivier and Robert Shaw.

James, who appeared as clan elder Campbell in Braveheart and also played the dad of Ewan McGregor’s junkie character Renton in Trainspotting, is possibly best known by younger viewers for his stint as Jeor Mormont in Game of Thrones.

As Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, he starred in 12 episodes of the fantasy hit before meeting a violent end in series three.

Last year he returned to screens in popular ITV drama The Bay while also making his debut in Indian cinema after featuring in Tamil-language thriller Jagame Thandhiram.

While others may recognise him from his unexpected but eventful stint on Big Brother when he finished fourth in the 2017 celebrity version.

In his personal life, James grew up between Highgate, north London and Clydebank and left school at 15 to work in a shipbreakers’ yard.

James previously told The Scottish Sun his love of books led him into acting when he joined a local drama class at Clydebank Repertory Theatre alongside Ian Tough — who would later become one half of The Krankies.

He has been married to his wife Annie since 2000 and they have two sons, Findlay and Ethan.

They lived in Twickenham, south west London before moving to Chertsey in Surrey in the Nineties.

He was honoured with an MBE in 2017 for services to drama.
