Game of Thrones season eight has arrived after a two-year wait and episode three will go down in history as one of the most epic battles to ever air on screen.

Spoilers for Game of Thrones season 8 below.

Metro.co.uk caught up with Samwell Tarley actor John Bradley at the series’ Belfast premiere where we asked him what character he would like to play if he wasn’t Sam.

‘Wow, that’s a great question… I’m going to say I’d like to play Lord Varys,’ he said.

Lord Varys aka the spider is played by the inimitable Conleth Hill, but we couldn’t imagine anyone else as Sam.

‘Not that I’d play it anywhere near as well as Conleth but there’s something about that character that I find so interesting.

‘Because he’s so powerful, but he’s kind of in the background and he exerts so much influence over people and carries a lot of responsibility.’

John continued: ‘He’s just always in people’s ear and he’s a very persuasive man, he’s just unbelievably intelligent, I really like that.’

Ultimately, John feels that the casting directors got it right.

‘I think realistically, the casting job on Game of Thrones is just so amazing, there’s so many physical extremes and emotional extremes to cast.

‘Genuinely, the characters are so real and so vivid, no one could play any other character I don’t think.

He added: ‘We’re all just so right physically, we all bring so much of ourselves to these characters and I don’t know how they managed to cast all those parts but they did and I’m just thankful that I was around when they were.’

Thankfully the beloved bookish Night’s Watcher managed to survive the Battle of Winterfell and we’re holding out hope continues to stick around for the next three episodes.

Check out who certain cast members wished their characters killed as the series comes to an end.

Game of Thrones season 8, episode 4 airs on HBO on Sunday and Sky Atlantic and NOW TV on Monday.
