Game of Thrones star Ian McElhinney has been confirmed to join Jodie Whittaker for Doctor Who‘s epic two-part series finale in three weeks time.

McElhinney memorably played Daenerys Targaryen’s mentor Barristan Selmy in HBO’s high-fantasy epic and will now be swapping swords for sonic screwdrivers in his new role.

And if that wasn’t enough, an iconic classic villain from the show will also be returning for a showdown with the Doctor.

It’s been announced by showrunner Chris Chibnall that the Cybermen will be returning for the two-part finale, which he’s dubbed ‘one of the most epic space opera stories we’ve ever done.’

Speaking on his new role, McElhinney enthused: ‘I very much enjoyed my time on Doctor Who.

‘The team were a delight to work with and everyone was very supportive and welcoming. All in all, it was a blast.’

The episode titles forming the two-part finale have also been revealed, containing the biggest hint yet that one of the series’ most enduring mysteries will be solved.

Episode nine takes the title of Ascension of the Cybermen whilst the second and final part is entitled The Timeless Children.

For all of you Whovians paying attention – this is a clear reference to the ongoing story arc of the Timeless Child.

We don’t know much about the shadowy figure that was first referenced in Whittaker’s first series in 2018.

‘We see deeper though, further back,’ the psychic Remnants told the Doctor then. ‘The Timeless Child… we see what’s hidden, even from yourself. The outcast, abandoned and unknown…’

Now if that doesn’t make you want to turn in, we don’t know what will.

Doctor Who continues this Sunday at 7.10pm on BBC One.
