Game of Thrones star Kristian Nairn, the man behind the cherished hero, Hodor, has revealed that even he was duped by his own character’s journey in the fantasy epic, and admitted he actually came up with his own very plausible fan theory.
Hodor was of course killed during the unbearably harrowing season six episode, The Door, sacrificing himself to protect the young Bran Stark from an army of White Walkers.
‘Hold the door…..’
We’re still not really over it, to be honest.
But no one was more surprised by the path of the gentle giant than Nairn, who thought Hodor would eventually be revealed as the third Clegane brother, sibling to The Hound and The Mountain, namely because of his size.
Speaking to SFX, Nairn elaborated: ‘A theory I had, being a big guy, maybe he was another one of the Clegane brothers, and something happened to him as a child, like it did with the Hound, having his face burnt, which made him the way he is.’
Of all the wild Game of Thrones fan theories out there, Nairn’s actually makes the most sense.
The 42-year-old added that he used to try and bribe A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin for spoilers.
‘I bought him whiskies, vodkas, everything,” he joked. ‘Never worked. He has a good poker face.’
Game of Thrones officially wrapped up filming earlier this month and Nairn recently teased fans that Hodor could well make an epic comeback, because stranger things have genuinely happened.
‘I think it was so well done,’ he said to Huffington Post of his final episode. ‘And you also have that little bit of mystery at the end because you don’t actually see him die. Is he dead? Who knows?’
Game of Thrones is expected to return to HBO and Sky Atlantic in April 2019.
