Once again, celebrities are boarding the #IMDboat at Comic-Con, joining captain Kevin Smith to chart a course for some pop-culture conversations.
On Friday, “Game of Thrones” star Liam Cunningham joined the “Clerks” director, who had a question about the much-maligned series finale.
“As somebody who was involved, who do you think should have sat on the Iron Throne at the end?” Smith asked Cunningham, who played Ser Davos Seaworth on the HBO hit.
“The weird thing is, there wasn’t a week that went by that we weren’t all sitting waiting to go on as they set up a scene or whatever where we’d look at each other in costume and go, ‘Who do you think it’s gonna be?’ We were the same as everybody else at home; we were speculating,” he revealed.
“This is part of the genius of George [R.R. Martin] and the guys’ writing is that right up till the end, everybody has kind of gone, ‘Who do you think it’ll be? Who’s your money on?’ and that’s brilliant storytelling — it’s all about speculating,” he continued. “That’s what keeps an audience interested and they did it right up until the last episode.”
While the response was diplomatic, Smith pointed out that Cunningham didn’t answer his question. “Who did you want to see on the Iron Throne. Liam, I want your answer!” he demanded.
The crafty actor, however, threw it back to Smith. “Who would you want?” he asked.
“Honestly, I’m not just saying this ’cause you’re here — Ser Davos, man!” Smith replied.
“You can’t vote for yourself!” Cunningham quipped. “Carice van Houten, who plays Melisandre, she kind of said if the world was a good place Samwell Tarly should have ended up on the throne. But he was never going to be hard enough to make those tough decisions. I’m not sure Davos was either. Maybe Jon Snow — maybe Jon Snow!”
“Davos would be an excellent king because he would never point fingers at anyone else,” Smith suggested.
“Yeah, that’s true,” quipped Cunningham, joking about Stannis Baratheon chopping off four of his character’s digits as punishment for his past as a smuggler. “Well, four of them!”
