Game Of Thrones star Nathalie Emmanuel has revealed she worked in retail after leaving Hollyoaks, while defending ex-EastEnders star Katie Jarvis.
Actors have been sharing their ‘normal’ jobs in between roles in support of Katie, 28, who is now working at a security guard at B&M.
And Nathalie told of her time in retail after leaving her tole as Sasha Valentine on Hollyoaks after four years in 2010.
The 30-year-old was responding to former Hollyoaks star Cassie Powney, who played Mel Burton, after she tweeted: ‘Do people think TV companies carry on paying actors’ bills once they’ve left the show?! 🧐 Weeks after finishing on Hollyoaks I interned at magazines, running errands and making (really bad) tea. Thank god they weren’t a judgmental bunch of b*****ds!’
Nathalie replied: ‘I worked in retail…
‘Unfortunately people really love to see (what they perceive) as someone’s downfall…. I was quite regularly teased by customers or experience them enjoying bossing me around…. but I got my payslip every month and I paid my bills whilst forming a thick skin and an iron will.
‘Having a job is an achievement but it really is a privilege. In many places in the world people can’t get a job that pays them anything near a living wage. These tabloids will criticise people who collect benefits but in the next article humiliate someone for working.’
Nathalie went on to nab the role of Missandei on Game Of Thrones and has since starred in two The Fast and The Furious movies as Ramsey and landed the role of Maya in Four Weddings and A Funeral.
Katie, who played Hayley Slater on EastEnders last year, has not taken on any new acting roles and has opted to provide for her two children Lillie May, 10, and eight-year-old Alfie, rather than fight her way through an uncertain and difficult industry.
‘I’ve taken a step back from acting. I’ve got a job and I’m looking after my kids,’ she told Daily Star Sunday.
More power to her.
Amongst those who have supported Katie are Hollyoaks and The Fall star Bronagh Waugh, who tweeted: ‘Since leaving Hollyoaks I have had some amazing TV & film gigs but I’ve also had loads of times of being out of “work” so have worked as a nanny, a cleaner, and a teacher and I am proud of every single one of those jobs.
‘I don’t know her but Katie Jarvis seems like a BOSS.’
