Many fans might have bemoaned the controversial ending to Game Of Thrones, but it seems the biggest twist in the finale came from creator George RR Martin himself.
In the season eight finale, Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) became the character who ended up ruling over King’s Landing and the majority of Westeros – after a convincing pitch from Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage).
The decision to put Bran on the throne met a divisive reaction from fans, after the character was largely an outsider during the huge battles and leadership tussles.
Speaking in HBO documentary Making Game Of Thrones, Isaac Hempstead Wright revealed how the finale’s twist came from the mind of George RR Martin, and not showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss.
‘David and Dan told me there were two things George RR Martin had planned for Bran – that was the Hodor revelation, and that he would be king,’ Isaac said.
‘So that’s pretty special to be directly involved in something that is part of George’s vision. It was a really nice way to wrap it up.’
But does this mean the unfinished Game Of Thrones books will end the same way? George previously gave a suitably vague answer to how it will differ from the show.
In a recent blog post, George wrote: ‘How will it all end? I hear people asking.
‘The same ending as the show? Different? Well… yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes.’
Very useful, George.
In the meantime, filming on the Game Of Thrones prequel is about to kick off with Naomi Watts, Miranda Richardson and more.
