Game Of Thrones director Deborah Riley might be up for an award at the 70th Annual Emmys this year, however she has recently revealed that the final season almost killed her.
Nominated for Outstanding Production Design For A Narrative Period Or Fantasy Program, the 45-year-old has confessed that she gave the show her all.
Talking to Deadline ahead of the ceremony, Riley revealed the amount of time and energy she put into creating GOT’s final season.
She said: ‘The final season nearly killed me. I realised at a certain point that all of the work in previous seasons was just a warm-up for season eight.
‘By the end, I had nothing left to give and finished knowing I had done everything I could. Season eight does not pull any punches and is raw and honest and important. I can’t wait to see it.’
From designing Dragonstone, the House of Black and White and the pyramids of Meereen, Riley has sure made her mark on the show since joining for series four.
But it appears Dragonstone is her favourite set, as she revealed: ‘Dragonstone was the piece of the puzzle that I was most excited about. The outline described so many elements that were going to need to fit together, both locations and set builds. I also felt a great responsibility in helping to tell the story of the character through the presentation of the space.
‘I knew from the start that it was going to take careful planning to make it work as a believable whole.’
And it was the episode Dragonstone that the team submitted for an Emmy consideration, which Riley confessed she was very proud to offer this for consideration.
Just last month it was announced that the final season’s first half will be released in 2019.
The eighth season will be the shortest yet, with only six episodes left to wrap up all the hanging plot threads in Westeros.
