Game of Thrones season eight saw many beloved characters meet their maker, but even though she was one of the lucky survivors Gwendoline Christie became angered by one particular Brienne of Tarth moment.

During episode four ‘The Last of the Starks’, Brienne has already been knighted by Jaime Lannister and this is soon followed by a night of (controversial) intimacy between the two.

However, the morning after we see the Kingslayer galloping away to go and protect his love (and sister) Cersei Lannister who’s surrounded by enemies thousands of miles away.

Both siblings are later killed by falling debris.

Speaking to Deadline recently, the Brienne actress explained how this juxtaposition between the scenes – being knighted, making love with Jaime and him then leaving – left her feeling “incredibly upset about it on the character’s behalf.”

She added: “I did feel angry for the character in that moment, but what was brilliant is that she goes straight back to work, and ultimately she supersedes her ambition.”

Gwendoline, whose performance earned her an Emmy Award nomination, also indicated that she’s made peace with that aspect of the story after becoming “deeply, deeply protective” of her character.

“I was also thrilled about it as an actor, because it meant getting to use some real acting muscles”.

Game of Thrones aired on HBO in the US, and you can also catch up on the show via Hulu. Pre-order seasons 1-8 on DVD and Blu-ray now.
