Actor Conleth Hill recently appeared on the talk show Lorraine to talk about his career, which of course includes a discussion of his role as Lord Varys on Game of Thrones. “[It was] life-changing, career-changing,” Hill said of playing the Master of Whisperers, per Express.

That said, while it changed his life, Hill doesn’t have to deal with people rushing up on the streets and asking for pictures, which is the fate of a lot of cast members from the show. “The thing is when you go out and about, and if you are out with pals that worked on Game of Thrones, people don’t recognize you.”

John Bradley, who played Samwell, and I are good mates still and go to Old Trafford, and that’s the only place I don’t mind being recognized but people would ask me to leave, so they could get a photo.

Why do people recognize Hill’s castmates but not him? It might have something to do with the fact that Hill, unlike Varys, has a rather magnificent head of hair. I think people assume that the guy who plays Varys will be bald, so it doesn’t compute when they see Hill looking like this:

That said, apparently Hill wasn’t even recognized while filming was going on. “They didn’t [recognize me], even while in the midst of shooting, there was lots of ‘can we have that security man less close to the cast’,” he laughed. At one point he was mistaken for a “wine waiter.” Maybe he just has one of those faces?

Conleth Hill denies responsibility for that accursed Game of Thrones coffee cup

While he was on Lorraine, Hill also fielded questions about another enduring topic: that thrice-blasted coffee cup that showed up in a scene from the show’s eighth season. I swear people will never stop talking about this.

Every cast member seems to give a different answer as to who’s coffee that was, although at one point Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) did finger Hill for the deed. But Hill denies it. “And where am I?” he asked, implying that it couldn’t have been his coffee cup since he’s not in the shot. “I think I was to Emilia’s left, sort of out of the frame. But I genuinely… no, it wasn’t me.”

Hill says that he “did take the blame for a while,” which is something that can be said for a lot of cast and crew members in the years since “The Last of the Starks” aired.

You can see Hill right now as Sergeant PJ Collins on Holding, a new four-part ITV drama.
