Game Of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has teased what Jaime Lannister will be dealing with come season eight, and it smells like fresh identity crisis.
Jaime was last seen in season seven leaving behind his twin sister/lover Cersei (Lena Headey), who has consistently been his rock and driving force throughout the whole show.
Now he’s alone, Jaime is in a fascinating predicament of deciding his place and allegiances within Westeros – just as the White Walker threat barrels towards Kings Landing.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau teased some of the major questions Jaime will be facing in season eight.
Nikolaj said: ‘Can we redefine ourselves? Most people have moments in their life where you go, “Can I really, fundamentally change?” The core of him has always been Cersei… when that’s taken away, what are you then? What’s left? Is there anything left?
‘When he leaves, obviously he has no idea. He doesn’t know the answer to that question.’
In their final scene together last season, Cersei indicates she may have Jaime killed which he refuses to comprehend, saying: ‘I don’t believe you.’
Nikolaj however isn’t convinced this could spin around into Jaime’s revenge against Cersei, saying: ‘That’s, of course, said in a moment of passion. Who knows if it’s true?’
‘I’ve almost been married 20 years and I’m very, very lucky. I have a wonderful wife. But over 20 years, there are times where you have fights.
‘You can be so angry that for a second in your passion and anger you can go, “Oh, fuck this.” Of course, three seconds later, you go, “No, no, no. What am I doing? What am I thinking?”
‘I think the fundamental emotions are the same in every relationship. As a setup for the season we’re shooting now, it was just amazing.’
He also described the final season as the ‘toughest by far’ to shoot but also the ‘most fulfilling’.
So what could this all mean? Jaime’s redemption feels like his character’s main thrust since he was branded with Kingslayer status, so could he join forces with similarly banished family member Tyrion and reign hell over Kings Landing?
Game Of Thrones season eight is expected to air in 2019.
