A stuntman is suing the makers of Game Of Thrones after he broke his ankle during a stunt, which he claims has wrecked his career.
Andy Pilgrim, 41, was filming a scene where he and 14 other stuntmen had to leap through a collapsing wall with the Night King’s dead army, when he broke his ankle.
He claimed the set was ‘unsafe’ and his lawyers told the court that he was left with a ‘lack of spring in his step’, meaning he could no longer perform his trademark ‘jumping’ or ‘heavy impact’ stunts.
Pilgrim asked for £200,000 from Fire & Blood Productions Ltd, who make Game of Thrones, but the company’s lawyers say injuries are an ‘occupational hazard’ of being a stuntman.
Pilgrim has been a stunt double for a host of stars including Rowan Atkinson and Robert Downey Jr, as well as appearing in several scenes for Game Of Thrones.
The injury actually happened back in 2014, and court documents say the defence claimed that the stunt was ‘straightforward’ and that none of the other 14 stuntmen were injured or raised any concerns about their safety.
They said: ‘None of the stunt performers including Mr Pilgrim raised any query or concern.
‘The injuries were caused either by pure accident or by Mr Pilgrim’s failure to execute the straightforward and uncomplicated stunt properly and with the skill and care of a reasonably competent stunt performer.
‘All the other stunt performers in the company of Mr Pilgrim… being 15 in number, each rode the descent without difficulty or injury.
‘Physical injury is an occupational hazard of working as a stunt performer.’
The production company also disputed the severity of Pilgrim’s injury, stating that he had since worked on more episodes of the show, despite claiming to have been left with ‘post-traumatic osteoarthritis’.
The case will continue at a date to be fixed.
