  1. 'Winter is coming' does not have anything at all to do with White Walkers or wights. Tales of the Long Night and of the Walkers are believed to be pure myth by everyone until some wights and an Other are seen in episode 1 in the lands beyond the Wall for the first time in many, many centuries. And even then it's difficult to get anyone that hasn't laid eyes on them to believe they exist.

Winters are rough in the North. Many die in the harsh, years-long cold and dark. The winter in "Winter is coming" is the literal meaning. All Northerners know that season is the hardest to endure.

  2. Just because a story can't be 100% digested on the first viewing does not mean it's "hard to follow." It's what makes it great. SMART television is something that has been lacking for awhile. Dumbing any entertainment down just so the slowest of the audience members can grasp things easily is a bad, bad move.
As it stands, the show has already taken out a TON of characters and settings… that's dumbed down quite enough as far as I'm concerned.

  3. The only thing wrong with the Stark sigil is it's facing the wrong way. A sigil would be worn on a shield, riding into battle with your shield correctly positioned on your left arm, the wolf's head would be facing away from the enemy, as if retreating.
If you look at animal sigils throughout history, they face left not right.
Still, it does look really cool in the show.

Also, I'm surprised you missed the other symbolism behind Shaggdog's name; "In its original sense, a shaggy dog story is an extremely long-winded anecdote characterized by extensive narration of typically irrelevant incidents and terminated by an anticlimax or a pointless punchline." (Quoted from Wikipedia.) I think this fits well with Rikkon's untimely end.

Great video btw. I've never really considered this aspect.

  4. **SPOILER ALERT** for those not caught up with everything that's happened on the show so far. Proceed and read on with caution…

    You have been warned…

Justice has finally been served! While the northern independence regime was fucked over badly, the southerners were absolutely RAPED even harder.

Seasons 1-5 saw the increasing death and betrayal of the emotional center of the plot- and the central protagonists of the series House Stark as they were gradually deposed. Starting with the attempted murder of Bran, the grizzly beheading of their honorable patriarch Ned which set the entire narrative plot in motion, followed by the gruesome and sloppily staged execution of Rodrik Cassel by Theon Greyjoy, the devastatingly infamous Red Wedding orchestrated by Walder Frey, Roose Bolton and Tywin Lannister which sealed the fate of Rob and Catelyn as well as the majority of the northern army, followed by the the cruel and cunning death of Rickon at the hands of Ramsay Bolton, and many other shocking scares and betrayals including the death (and subsequent resurrection) of Jon and the stabbing of Arya.

But now the tables have truly tuned and house Stark have arguably suffered the least blow of any of the great houses to date. Think about the implications for a second:

    – Both Baratheon parties (including Renly and Stannis) were utterly decimated.
House Tyrell is now extinct, abolished by poison and wildfire (so much for "growing strong" lol).
    – This was paired with the imminent, scandalous destruction of House Martell of Dorne at the hands of Cercei- the final nail in the coffin for the Dorne plot.
-The fate of the Arryn's (including Jon and Lysa) was sealed at the hands of Littlefinger (now deceased).
Theon Greyjoy was tortured and converted into Reek, while Euron committed regicide against Balon Greyjoy- thus usurping control of the iron islands via the Kingsmoot.
House Frey was decimated at the hands of Arya, and boy did that "rat cook" have it coming!!
    – Even the seemingly invincible team Targaryen has been somewhat partially desposed.
    – And now… Most recently, the spoiled, wealthy primary antagonists of the show- House Lannister ( i.e. in the words of Renly Baratheon: "The most pompous ponderous cunts the gods ever suffered to walk the earth") have finally succumbed to the decades worth of backstabbing and betrayal they inflicted on others- and karma has finally caught up with them. As of the season 7 finale, Cercei is the only Lannister left in a shaky position of debatable and highly tentative "power" that could come crashing down at any moment
The Point emerges: By now, the pain, suffering, and death the Lannisters have brought upon themselves and others has majorly surpassed any of the major injustice inflicted upon House Stark.

Who's left standing after all this? Dead right! "When the snow falls and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives…"

In the latter seasons, as the Lannisters are increasingly scattered, divided and gradually snuffed out (reflecting the deeply regrettable northern misfortunes in earlier seasons), the remaining Stark's plot arcs are converging and reuniting. The titular wolf pack is finally starting to rebuild, and the remaining offspring have grown and developed so much throughout each of their individual story lines and character arcs. Not to mention, each of the remaining Starks have all developed some form of "supernatural" ability (with the exception of perhaps Sansa who has learned to play the game of thrones).

It really is delightful to watch. As the world crumbles around them, House Stark battles on, and will continue to do so as they have for thousands of years! 🙂

To hell with "Winter is Coming," House Stark might as well usurp the Tyrell motto: "Growing Strong."
