Using the most innocent of profanity in a comment gets my videos demonetized, so consider tipping me into my swear jar. This video got demonetized on it’s first upload because it contained the word: death. That’s why I had to use “demise”.

❒The Impact of Character Demise
How did character demise affect the story in the past, and how do they affect the story now, if at all. It seems that since season 5, characters are being disposed of for contrived reasons, obviously as a consequence of D&D trying to get rid of all political characters. So what we are left with is a Lord of the Rings rip-off. The Night’s King (Sauron) is gathering an army to attack the realm of men. And he can only be stopped by a chosen few.

❒Notes ✍
David Benioff & D. B. Weiss (hereafter: D&D) are the creators of Game of Thrones. The show is based on the novel series, A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin (hereafter: GRRM🎅). Until season five D&D had GRRM’s books to draw on, after that D&D were on their own. From that point on, the show became an agglomeration of Hollywood tropes. And seen how GRRM is all about subverting tropes in his books, this is a brutal departure from the books.
SAM ASHURST
GRRM’s beautiful monologues used to be the backbone of the show, with D&D lifting dialogue directly from the books.
Now, characters are barely allowed to speak before someone’s interrupting them to move the plot towards the next massive action set-piece.
D&D have gone from expert adapters to pretty decent fan-fiction writers.
VERGE STAFF
The show arguably became an extended exercise in fan fiction. And above all, the dragons, the White Walkers, and magic in general took center stage.
What I am actually mourning after a criminally bad season of Game of Thrones is the days when the human relationships were given space to be convoluted, and crucial to the plot. Now they’re just mild annoyances to be glazed over when they’re inconvenient to the show’s narrative momentum. How many scenes did we have this year in which people summarily forgave each other, or just checkboxed their personal histories, all to make sure we didn’t waste too much time before the next big special effect?
The main issue I had with season 7 is that Game of Thrones is asking us to make excuses for weak writing. I had too many questions, and that ultimately pulled me out of this season. Why is Arya whispering threats to Sansa? Why doesn’t Bran intervene? How did Bronn manage to drag Jaime out of that river with all his armor on? How does Gendry know how to get back to Eastwatch? Why didn’t they just bring a raven with them when they went beyond the Wall? How fast can a raven fly? WHY DIDN’T THE NIGHT KING JUST TAKE THEM ALL OUT WITH SPEARS WHILE THEY WERE STRANDED ON THE ISLAND? And don’t get me started on the timeline. (But seriously, are they teleporting? How did Euron build all those ships? WHY ISN’T GILLY’S BABY AGING?). I would be more forgiving if the plan was to capture a White Walker, because no one has seen one of those south of The Wall. But Cersei currently has a zombie bodyguard, so what’s one more undead dude hanging out in the capital?

All of the character development is done and GRRM isn't consulting with the show anymore… What do you do?
Delete Dorne with random family murder. Delete Tyrells with tactical wildfire nuke and off screen battle for Highgarden. Semi-off creen battle of Casterly Rock that serves no plot purpose. Give NK a wight dragon to bring down the wall without a fight. Save epic wight battle for the last season. All good guys wear plot armor. Tyrion character development is growing a beard and becoming stupid. Littlefinger becomes Sansa-horny retard. Boat sex. Unsullied sex. Plot advances via Bran the Google. CGI CGI CGI CGI and more CGI will distract fans from bad writing…
The list can go on and on and on but what's the points. We get what we get. We'll watch s8 and we'll love GoT forever but we'll also hate D&D for their rush job and ruining what was suppose to be final few epic and best seasons of a great show.
D&D I'll see ya in hell,
If only George had completed WoW and ADOS before the show started. That way this could've been avoided, potentially.
I've been reading comic books for years, and the thing that gets me most is when a character never dies or gets brought back for bullshit reasons. It basically means that nothing matters in the story and there are no stakes. I liked it when Samwell Tarly survived early on because he took no unnecessary risks and not because any plot armour.
you forgot tommen his death had impact
Seasson 7 is really poor. A lot of stereotypes in that chapter when all main characters "unite" to capture a zombie.
Also, this: "How did Bronn manage to drag Jaime out of that river with all his armor on?"
I mainly agree with your post season 4 death ratings, but the death of Roose Bolton made aczually sense nad was a fitting end for the character arc :DD
It will always amazes me the fact that the Night King walked through A LINE OF DRAGON FIRE like nothing
They killed off all the political characters/storylines because it would require actual skill to write them. Remember all of early littlefinger's/tywin's/olenna's epic speeches that made us think "whoa that's some deep shit they're talking about"? Remember how tyrion used to be clever and important? The only reason he hasn't been killed off yet is because his fandom is strong. But what is left of him now? What's left of all of them? All the characters we used to know and love are either sacrificed for the sake of CGI battles/zombies/dragons, dumbed down with ridiculous dialogue like Davos, or turned into boring-as-fuck stereotypes (good boy jon, badass arya, and so on). I really thought the sand snakes was the lowest the show could sink, but boy was I wrong.
now it's not about character death affect the story, but more about character death affect the budget
I agree on everything except off Theon, his PTSD kicked in again and he just ran for his life
Who would win: A legendary knight of The Kingsguard and one of the best fighters in the show vs. some dudes with robes and daggers?
S7E6 gotta be the worst episode ever
Doesn't the death of Littlefinger count as fan service?
Lose ends or not I still loved the sand snakes dying. It was probably the only thing I enjoyed this season(along with Euron sassing Jaime,I guess)
Anyways great video as always. Shows in a few minutes how much the show has fallen.
6:11 Arya wooden acting ruined a already bad scene.
You forgot Thoros. Clearly killed so there wasn't the option of bringing anyone back from the dead. They could have killed him off in a more respectable way that wasn't so predictable.
I wish season 7 never happened.
Ramsey kills his father so he can be lord Bolton. The sand snakes kill the prince so they can take power. Cerci had the perfect opportunity to kill all her enemies so she did.
GOT season 7 should have had writing team of Breaking Bad. I feel sorrry for storytelling level drop for GOT. D&D ruined it after season 5.
Love your videos man.
Damn it, Game of Thrones used to be so good. RIP GoT post season 4.
Do you watch TWD? If so, I would love if you made these videos, comparing S1, S4 and S5 to S7 and S8. There was a huge decline in quality.
U ENED 100K SUBZ ATLEAST
Instead of Arya killing Walder Frey & Sons which though enjoyable didn't add anything to the story (literally no one gave a shit that the Lord of the Riverlands was murdered with all his heirs) it should have been Jon as King. It would've been a nice to see what he would do and made that Sansa vs. Jon thing actually make sense. Or Jon could've been a complete physcopath during the siege and earns a reputation of what sort of King he is so the Jon and Dany meeting would've been a bit more tense than Dany demanding that he bend the knee
Barristan Selmy: Dayne, how on earth did Eddard Stark defeat you?
Arthur Dayne: Well, I wasn't really defeated. I was outnumbered 4 to 1 against Eddard and some of his best men, all of them heavily armored too, I basically won the fight, I even disarmed Lord Stark, but someone stabbed me from behind. Now, how did you go?
Barristan Selmy: Well.. I got killed by some un-armored peasants with knives..
Awkward silence
Tommen's death was funny as shit on it's own, but remembering that IT Crowd scene made it fucking hilarious
Wow what a trash show
Finally someone mentioning hwo fucking ridicolous Tommens suicide was.
You should have included Arya being fine after getting stabbed in the gut and falling into a dirty river under "immortality".
Every time someone tells me they loved season 7 I cry.
That intro though with Tommen 😂😂
Pretty much spot on.
I would argue Jojens death served no real purpose. Otherwise I agree with everything.
Yeah i'm guessing the absolute last season and episode of GoT will leave a quite vile taste in your mouth.
For Your sake BGoQ I hope You don't watch The Walking Dead… 😉
