Bran Stark becoming king of the six kingdoms in the Game Of Thrones finale was one of the most shocking moments the series delivered – but it was planned for years.
Not only that, but according to Issac Hempstead-Wright, Bran’s knowledge of that was what laid out everything that happened on that trek.
So Hodor’s death? Being carried around as he couldn’t walk? All to make it to the crown.
Speaking in a new documentary on the box set of the completed series, the cast and crew, including actor Issac, defended the shock decision to make him king.
He said: ‘There’s no real surprise with Bran, and there’s a great line that he goes “why do you think I came all this way?”
‘Which I don’t even think is a reference to coming all the way down to King’s Landing.’
Peter Dinklage, who played Tyrion Lannister throughout the series, also added that he was not surprised by the final decision – which came down to his character to make.
‘I wasn’t surprised by Bran, Bran is the only probably pure person in there,’ he said. ‘The idea that he cannot father children is the real key for Tyrion’s reasoning, because they have repeated the cycle in Westerosian history of heirs being really bad.’
After eight seasons of waiting to see who would end up reigning over Westeros, it was decided via Tyrion Lannister in front of a committee that it should be Bran, while sister Sansa ruled her own separate Queendom in the North.
That is one of Tyrion’s many explanations for his choice of ruler in the final scene of the show – where he explained it to the members of the committee that it was a ‘wheel that needed to break’.
‘From now on, rulers will not be born, they’ll be chosen, on this spot by the Lords and Ladies of Westeros, to serve the realm,’ he declared.
It was definitely a controversial move, but it’s now been revealed by show creator David Benioff that the move (which he and co-runner DB Weiss have been slated for) wasn’t their decision – it was author, George RR Martin’s.
‘Around season 3 we went to visit George RR Martin, and he writes and kind of figures things out as he’s writing,’ he said in the new documentary. ‘We went to visit him back them, and this is when he was still writing book five, he didn’t know yet where the story was going.
‘He knew a few key things, and one of those key things that the final king at the end of the story, would be Bran.’
