I think this is a perfect example of how much a character can be hated. Let's face it: EVERYONE hated Joffrey, even people who don't watch GoT hated Joffrey.
During this scene, I was happy Joffrey died too, but to be perfectly honest, I cringed. There's just something about people choking so much that they turn purple and blood runs from their noses and eyes that just makes me sick. With the Red Wedding, I was shocked that my favorite family lost more of its members, but I wasn't as bothered by all the blood as I was with Joffrey's death.
So in conclusion, Joffrey must really be hated (more than I hate him, anyway) for fans to be fiercely giddy and ecstatic to see him die like that and celebrate throughout the scene and long after it.
