Game of Thrones fans will no-doubt remember the horrific Waif (played by Faye Marsay), who appeared in seasons five and six alongside Arya Stark (Maisie Williams).

She helped to train the young Stark girl in the ways of the Faceless Men, with Arya quickly turning on her teachers and breaking their rules.

This resulted in a number of brutal attacks by the Waif, including one horrific beating which left Arya close to death.

Eventually Arya got her own back, and killed the Waif, leaving her safe from the Faceless Men once again and free to return to Winterfell.

Now, fans have become to theorise over how the Waif came to be and what her role in the overall storyline was with some claiming she had to be killed by Arya so she could return to Westeros to kill the Night King (Vladimir Furdik).

Reddit user coolbiscuitLOL proposed: “They say in the show that Waif’s father gave her to the Faceless Men as payment for an assassination, but did the Faceless Men actually kill the Waif and take her face?”

The user then pointed out the contract negotiations laid out by the Faceless Men when discussing killing a child.

They explained: “Sometimes, if a powerful lord asks them to kill the child of one of his enemies, the Faceless Men give as their ‘price’ that in return they will kill the lord’s own child.

“The lord can reject this, but it also means rejecting the entire contract.”

They suggested the Waif was originally from a noble house and her father ordered an assassination on a young girl, which would have prompted the impending death of his own daughter – the Waif.

If she was in fact killed by the Faceless Men as part of a contract, her face may have just been an ongoing disguise used by one of the Faceless Men.

The user continued: “Killing the FM disguised as the Waif could have been Arya’s final test. Killing some girl isn’t worthy of her being accepted into the Faceless Men, but killing another faceless man would be.”

If Arya wasn’t able to kill the Waif, perhaps she would have also become a face for the secret organisation to wear.

However, without this hardship, Arya would not have been able to kill the Freys and the Night King in the final season.

Was the Waif simply a test to see if Arya was strong enough to kill the villain slowly approaching from beyond The Wall?

Meanwhile, fans of the show have become convinced Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) would have not become the next Mad Queen if she had her cohort Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen) by her side.

Jorah was killed during the Battle for Winterfell by the forces of the undead and prior to that he acted as Daenerys’s moral compass.

A Redditor theorised: “Emilia Clarke said in an interview that one of the main reason why Danny snapped was cause she was alone at the time – all she saw was contempt and fear and there was no one around to console her or comfort her.

“If Jorah were still alive and with her, there’s a high probability that we might have not seen the sudden spiral of events.

“Hence, if Jorah had never died in the Great Battle, perhaps Kings Landing wouldn’t be popcorn.”
