As we approach the final chapter in the Game of Thrones TV world, it’s a brilliant time to remember all those theories we once dreamed up.

Or those that were cooked up in the books we just knew needed to be instilled into the HBO series, with plotpoints so perfectly primed for George RR Martin’s literary dusting.

Alas, a little under a month until series eight, episode one kicks off and we pour ourselves back into the weekly mayhem, we must remember our fallen theories that have slipped to the backburner as the tragedy and triumph of the battle for Westeros continues.

Hodor as The Great Other

This one floated about for a bit, suggesting Bran Stark’s trusty aid Hodor was in control of the White Walkers.

It would have been great had this one, dreamt up by the punters who love the classic the most, come off – however after Hodor’s untimely end in season six that theory was shot in the foot.

Especially when the origins of Hodor and his name (‘hold the door’…don’t cry) became known.

While some fail to believe Hodor is truly dead and that he may come back as a White Walker, it’s safe to say the dude isn’t the one leading the great WW rebellion south to Winterfell this season.

Moving on.

Lady Stoneheart

When Catelyn Stark had her throat slit at the Red Wedding (chills, still gives us chills) the stoic woman of Winterfell was said to be coming back as Lady Stoneheart.

In the books, Catelyn is tossed into a river following her murder at the hands of the Freys, before she is found by Arya’s direwolf Nymeria.

Beric Dondarrion gives her the ‘kiss of life,’ however instead she rises as a grotesque sort of zombie-version of herself dubbed Lady Stoneheart.

Oh and she’s basically on a quest for revenge, out to murder any and all Freys.

It’s pretty obvious we’re not going to see Catelyn as Stoneheart, after even Martin admitted he was upset she was cut from the show.

‘In the book, characters can be resurrected. After Catelyn’s resurrection, it was Lady Stoneheart who became a vengeful and merciless killer,’ he said in an interview with Chinese Esquire. ‘In the sixth book, I still continue to write her. She is an important part of the entire book. [Keeping her character] is the change I most wish I could make in the [show].’

Tyrion a Targaryen?

Nope, moving on.

Okay, okay, so some thought Tyrion Lannister was a long-lost Targaryen and Daenerys’s brother, with her three dragons believed to be for Dany, Jon Snow (AKA Aegon Targaryen) and Tyrion.

With the death (and prompt White Walker resurrection) of Viserion the theory of Tyrion being the secret kid of Mad King Aerys died in the lake with it.

Also others believe seeing as both Sam and Bran – as old mate Three-Eyed Raven powers – have been able to see the true lineage of Jon they’d have figured out whether Tyrion was a Targaryen by now.

Or at least we would know.

Roose Bolton: vampire man

A vampire, idiot (Picture: HBO)

The theory that Roose Bolton is a vampire has been floating about for seasons, mainly because the book heavily hinted at this vibe.

In the book, Roose receives leechings and is a ‘pale pudgy character’ – perfect for being a vampire, righty?

That was well and truly killed, literally, when Roose was stabbed in the tum and died right there. Don’t vampires need a good heart staking to die?

Cleganebowl

How will this go down? (Picture: HBO/Helen Sloane)

Alright, so this is pretty much definitely going to happen this season, but it’s a theory we’ve been salivating over for quite some time now.

So while The Hound and The Mountain will meet in the arena for one final showdown, the theory now turns from ‘will it’ to ‘what will happen’.

Many believe while The Mountain, Ser Gregor Clegane, is already dead – having been zombie-fied by Qyburn to protect Cersei Lannister – his brother houndy AKA Sandor will still be able to get in the mortal wound…before dying himself.

It’ll be a nice little payback for burning his face as a kid.

And for us with that whole exploding head thing back in season four.

Sansa with child

Sansa can’t have Ramsay’s baby. That’s not cool (Picture: HBO)

After she was brutally raped by ‘husband’ Ramsay Bolton, a horrible theory emerged that Sansa Stark was pregnant with his baby.

This first took flight when in their final dialogue together, right before his dogs ripped his face off, Ramsay spoke about how Sansa will never be able to get rid of him.

‘I’m inside you,’ he said.

Cut to everyone losing their minds thinking poor Sansa might have to bear the child of this monster.

Since the Battle Of The Bastards though, there has been nothing to suggest she’s pregnant – and due to normal anatomical change she should have been sporting some sort of belly by the end of the season.

We can file this one in debunked.

We hope.

Game of Thrones returns 14 April.
