Tyrion to betray Daenerys? We hope not. (Picture: HBO)

Warning: Contains spoilers for Game Of Thrones season seven.

So that Game of Thrones finale has us all talking as we watched with our hands on our heads as some characters got their jiggy on, others died and many plots reach a particular conclusion. But there was a moment in that 1 hour and 21 minutes episode that left us wondering whether Daenerys’s Hand and trusted adviser Tyrion Lannister would betray her.

Let’s take a retrospective look at the very short moment when we catch the look on Tyrion’s face as Jon Snow and Daenerys are getting busy in bed.

This look. Look at it.

As hard as it is, let’s try and forget for a moment that this episode basically confirmed that Jon and Daenerys are related by blood (only Bran Stark and Samwell Tarly know this.)

At first glance to many viewers it could mean nothing but let’s try and step into Tyrion’s medieval boots for a quick second and see what is going through his mind.

For starters, the youngest Lannister is concerned about the King of the North and the Mother of Dragons doing the deed because he is worried they would be distracted. They do have to worry about their walking-dead enemies beyond the wall (you know the ones that just blew a huge hole in the The Wall that is supposed to be indestructible?)

Or maybe Tyrion has fallen for the silver-headed Targaryen because basically every man that gets to know her crushes on her badly, even if they were assigned to kill her – think back to Ser Jorah Mormont in Season 1. He was supposed to kill her but then fell in love with her.

But those are obvious reasons, let’s take it up a notch.

About half an hour before that happened in the episode, Jon had thrown Cersei’s demands back into her face so Tyrion was forced to risk his life to go and speak to his murderous sibling in private.

In a heated conversation, where they both admitted to hating each other yet both professed their love for their family, Tyrion then noticed that Cersei is pregnant.

We would have loved to have seen how that conversation panned out but in true Game of Thrones style, we didn’t.

What we do see is Cersei then fake-agree to accept Jon and Dany’s conditions for a truce so that they can fight the Night King and the Army of the Dead beyond the wall.

Still with us?

What if Tyrion knew she was lying? We know Tyrion loves Cersei’s children as much as she does, and that is probably the only thing they have in common aside from their surname.

Tyrion did admit to his guilt over the part he played in her children’s deaths. What if he had a change of heart about his allegiance to Dany the moment he found out he was going to be an uncle again? (Mind you this pregnancy could be a lie – Cersei is good at lying!)

The Huffington Post gathered some quotes from Goerge RR Martin’s novels to help us back our theory up. As we know this series of books led to the HBO show that we love so much today, but in it, Daenerys is warned at different times of a major betrayal she will face.

So far we haven’t really seen our dear Khaleesi suffer any major betrayals from people she trusts (people tend to be loyal to a woman who can command Dragons to burn them alive.)

Dany hears a prophecy in the House of the Undying that leads her to believe she will face three key betrayals:

‘The voices were growing louder, she realized, and it seemed her heart was slowing, and even her breath … three treasons will you know … once for blood and once for gold and once for love …’

Dany is also warned in the novel A Dance with Dragons not to trust a number of characters, including a lion (such as the lion of House Lannister):

‘Soon comes the pale mare, and after her the others. Kraken and dark flame, lion and griffin, the sun’s son and the mummer’s dragon. Trust none of them.

The evidence is right in front of us, but for once we really hope this theory doesn’t play out at all.

Either way, we will have to wait until the eighth and final season returns, possibly in 2019.
