I went to the Weta Workshop today (where they make some of the props) and our tour guide explained the situation, he knew the woman who makes the swords and she had spent so long on a proper sword and the damn director lost it before filming and there wasn't enough time to make a new one. The woman was furious about it. This sword is a shitty fake of the sword that was originally meant to be there.

just went to the weta shop today (lotr costumes) and they said a lot of times they will use either plastic or even rubber swords for uruk hai extras.

Jon Snow's sword is even rubberier when Ygritte shoots him with an arrow and he falls and runs for his horse in season 3 episode 10 "Mhysa" about 43:52–44:06 minutes in.
