Game of Thrones alum Jonathan Pryce, who just revealed that he survived the coronavirus after a stay in the hospital, has been cast in The Crown.
The Crown tells the story of the British royal family, starting in the 1950s when Queen Elizabeth II took over the throne from her father and ending sometime in the early 2000s. (For better or worse, the show won’t be covering more recent events like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle getting out of dodge, even though I would watch that.)
Along the way, different actors have played the royals at different times in their lives. The queen was played at first by Claire Foy, currently by Olivia Colman, and eventually by Imelda Staunton. Likewise, her husband Prince Philip was played first by Matt Smith and currently by Tobias Menzies. And now, Entertainment Weekly reports that Netflix has found an actor to play Philip in his old age: Game of Thrones alum Jonathan Pryce, who recently revealed that he survived the coronavirus after a stay in the hospital.
Pryce has had a long and impressive career, appearing in movies like Brazil, Evita, Glengarry Glen Ross, The Age of Innocence, the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and The Two Popes, but we can’t help it: to us he’ll always be the High Sparrow, who forced Cersei Lannister to take her Walk of Atonement.
Anyway, we won’t see him as Prince Philip for awhile. The show just aired its third season with a fourth on the way, and the older actors won’t come in until the fifth. It’ll end with the sixth…
…unless Netflix wants to extend things and cover the Meghan-Harry stuff, or even cast some new actors and show us what the royal family will look like in the year 2050! Just pitching ideas here.
