It is not the first time that George RR Martin announces a delay in the publication of the new novel since, from January 2016, he postponed the appearance of the work. Multiple release dates were given with no official announcements.

The news of the delay was made within a text in which Martin presented the appearance in 2018 of another book, Fire and Blood, about the history of the Targaryen family, ancestors of the Mother of Dragons, Daenerys Targaryen.

The author wants to make this book interesting and worth a read. This long delay is making fans more and more anxious to read “Winds of Winter.” However, they will be able to return to Westeros this year. I want to make it clear that Fire and Blood is not a novel. It is not a traditional narrative, and it never claimed to be. Let’s say it is an ‘imagined story.’

The previous title of the saga, A Dance with Dragons, was published in 2011, the same year that HBO released the first season of Game of Thrones.

Series of books by George RR Martin

Initially, the publication gap between the titles was smaller, but it is also true that George RR Martin’s novels have been gaining in pages and the number of characters. The series is:

  • A Game of Thrones (1996)
  • A Clash of Kings (1998)
  • A Storm of Swords (2000)
  • A Feast for Crows (2005)
  • A Dance with Dragons (2011)
  • The Winds of Winter (August 2020)
  • A Dream of Spring (no date set)

Of course, some fans have already expressed on social media their dissatisfaction with the delay of The Winds of Winter. But we hope that the release date goes through no further delay.
