Game of Thrones star Gemma Whelan has claimed that the HBO show changed the way roles are written for women in TV.
The White House Farm actress starred as Yara Greyjoy in the high-fantasy epic, and has said that after the series has aired, she’s seen the scripts she’s been offered for parts improve in quality in terms of female roles.
Speaking to Radio Times, the 38-year old explained: ‘When I started out, I wasn’t really woke to the idea of female roles being big, small or whatever. I was just grateful to get work.
‘Game of Thrones really did change things in terms of how women are written and represented.’
She continued: ‘Obviously, it was a fantasy, but the women were painted very realistically nonetheless.
‘Maybe not the murdering side of things, but they were independent and capable of running the show.
‘But nowadays, a huge part of the writing process is making women front and centre.’
The star also pointed out that there are also brilliant, male-led projects being made right now, using Succession as an example.
‘There’s space for us all,’ she concluded.
Gemma has also recently joined the cast of another beloved drama, as she will be popping up in Killing Eve season three.
She will be portraying the daughter of spy boss Carolyn (Fiona Shaw) in the Jodie Comer and Sanda Oh-led thriller.
Gemma has already promised that fans can expect a lot of shockers in the new run of episodes.
One massive shocker has already occurred, of course, with the death of a beloved character that also nicely paves the way for the actress’ character to appear.
Killing Eve season 3 episode 1 is available to stream now via BBC iPlayer.
