Game of Thrones season 8 hasn’t had the smoothest ride – from forgotten coffee cups to endless episodes leaks, it seems like a lot of mistakes are being made and even poor Gendry managed to get his own name wrong.
This article contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season 8, episode 4.
Episode four, The Last of the Starks followed the aftermath of the Battle of Winterfell and the living had a brief respite from violence to enjoy a drink led by Daenerys (Emilia Clarke).
This is when Joe Dempsie’s Gendry was singled out by Daenerys for being the son of Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy), who of course usurped her father and killed her brother.
In a strategic move, however, she decided to restore his title, making him no longer a bastard but a legitimate heir and Lord Gendry Baratheon of Dragonstone.
However, upon sharing the good news with Arya (Maisie Williams) Gendry said something which has annoyed some book readers.
‘I’m no longer Gendry Rivers, I’m Gendry Baratheon!’
Er, actually, you were Gendry Waters.
Each region of the Seven Kingdoms has bastard surnames which relate to their location.
So bastards from the North, like Jon, (Kit Harington) have the surname Snow.
Ones from Dorne like Ellaria, (Indira Varma) have the surname Sand.
Gendry is from King’s Landing, which is located in the Crownlands so his surname should be Waters.
Rivers is the surname given to bastards from the Riverlands.
As Gendry was what is known as an ‘unacknowledged bastard’ he never used neither Rivers nor Waters before this point, so there really was no need for the show to suddenly insert Rivers out of nowhere.
Fans have been discussing the error over on Reddit after episode four.
BalthasarVitek wrote: ‘So let’s be honest here. It’s bad writing.’
While another fan, KreepingLizard added: ‘Probably he wouldn’t have had a last name for most of his life since he wasn’t acknowledged by Bobby B. If he did, it definitely wouldn’t have been Rivers. Not sure how they goofed that one.’
Although it’s worth noting, that in season seven when Bran reveals that Jon was born in Dorne, he said he is really Jon Sand, not Snow and he was acknowledged.
Either way, Gendry is Gendry Baratheon now so maybe we should try and forget about the whole Rivers/Waters fiasco.
Game of Thrones season 8, episode 5 airs next Sunday and Monday on HBO, Sky Atlantic and NOW TV.
