This week on Take the Black Live, we debate the blowback George R.R. Martin got after hosting the Hugos, Disney’s decision to stream Mulan early, and more!

This week on Take the Black Live, we welcome WiC writer Corey Smith to the show, who’s filling in while regular cohost Mia Johnson is on vacation. He came on an interesting week, because there’s a lot happening in the nerd-o-sphere to talk about:

First up, we discuss the blowback A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin got after recently hosting the Hugo Awards. Are the accusations of bigotry borne out, or is this cancellation premature?

Next up, we have to discuss Disney deciding to release its live-action remake of Mulan, one of its highest-profile movies, straight to streaming. Is this a good idea? Bad idea? Was it inevitable either way? How might it change the movie distribution system going forward, and what is with that $30 price tag?

Finally, we pretty much gush about the second season of The Umbrella Academy, which just released on Netflix. This show really found its footing on its second go-round.
