DC and Marvel have been two of the most successful comic book franchises of all time, publishing some of the most iconic superheroes that have become staples to pop culture. Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man are the most popular superheroes all over the world, and a large majority of people have been influenced by them, including Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin.
Martin was fascinated by comics, and it wouldnât be wrong to say comics helped him cultivate his talent for writing. And just like any other kid on the block, Martin had his favorites when he was young, he was a Marvel fanboy, and he was simply enthralled when Spider-Man arrived. The teenage web-slinging superhero instantly became one of his favorites, and he explains to The Independent why:
âThere were cowboy comic books and there were war comic books, and for the girls, there were romance comic books â which I didnât touch of course! The stories never went anywhere. Superman would be there, and his girlfriend Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen his best friend, Perry White the editor of the Daily Planet, and something would happen. At the end of the story, everything would be exactly the way it was at the beginning of the story, for issue after issue, year after year.â
âStan Leeâs writing was so much better than what youâd been getting. Things happened. Spider-Man was progressing. It was so refreshing.â
