George R.R. Martin has mapped out a staggering future for Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg, sharing plans for as many as 12 additional Dunk & Egg novellas with HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms showrunner Ira Parker. These outlines extend the characters’ journey “all the way through their life,” according to Parker, suggesting a franchise with potentially more longevity than the original Game of Thrones itself. With three novellas already published and up to 12 more in outline form, Martin may have conceived material for as many as 15 total stories in the Dunk and Egg saga.

Parker and Martin maintain an unusually close creative partnership with direct script reviews and collaborative discussions shaping the show’s direction.
A Roadmap That Could Span a Decade or More
“He has shared with me about 10 to 12 more little outlines for books, for novellas, taking Dunk and Egg all the way through their life,” Parker told The National in an exclusive interview. If HBO maintains its current one-novella-per-season approach, the sheer volume of outlined material means A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms could potentially run as long as Game of Thrones’ eight seasons—or even longer.
Parker revealed that the show is currently focused on adapting the first novella, The Hedge Knight, while simultaneously developing a second season based on The Sworn Sword, with a third season likely drawing from The Mystery Knight.
A Creative Partnership That Honors the Source Material
What makes Martin’s extensive outline sharing particularly significant is the unusually close creative collaboration between the legendary author and Parker. Unlike typical Hollywood adaptations where authors hand off their work, Martin has been intimately involved in every aspect of the first season’s development.
Parker describes the partnership as “one of the most fulfilling creative partnerships of my whole career,” with Martin personally reviewing scripts and engaging in detailed discussions rather than issuing directives.
