George R.R. Martin has responded once again to mounting fan pressure and controversy over the long-delayed The Winds of Winter. Speaking at New York Comic Con, the Game of Thrones creator set the record straight about his progress, his passion for the book, and his reaction to accusations that he’s abandoned the series. Martin insists that, despite the years and distractions, his love for A Song of Ice and Fire—and Winds of Winter in particular—remains undiminished.

Facing Fans—and the Internet Storm
George R.R. Martin is no stranger to the ongoing drama around his unfinished saga. He acknowledged, “Every time that happens, and I announce it on my website, half the internet goes crazy,” Martin said. “‘Why the f— is George R.R. Martin writing this other thing when he should be writing Winds of Winter? What is he doing?’ And I want to say, ‘I did it in 1993, guys. Come on! It was lying in my drawer, and they wanted it, so I sold it to them!’”

He sympathizes with fans’ impatience, but also bristles at the more extreme speculation: “People speculate that I might pass away before finishing the books… I’m not going to die until I witness Jets and Giants in Subway Super. I think that means I’ll live forever.”
“I Love These Other Things Too”
Martin admits he’s “always struggled with deadlines,” and says the pressure is real—but he rejects claims he’s lost interest in writing about Westeros. “Yes, I do love Winds of Winter. I’m still interested in it, I’m still working on it, but honestly, I love these other things, too,” he says. For Martin, fiction—old or new—still brings the same spark that captured readers and launched a pop culture phenomenon.
