In an interview with the German newspaper Welt (h/t Esquire), Game of Thrones creator and author George R.R. Martin once again confirmed that the ending to his Game of Thrones books will be different than the polarizing TV show ending, noting that he didn’t expect the HBO series to catch up with his novels and move past them.
“People know an ending—but not the ending,” he said. “The makers of the TV show had overtaken me, which I didn’t expect.”
Martin still has two more novels to conclude the series, The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. It has been nine years since the last book, A Dance With Dragons, was released.
Meanwhile, HBO’s first Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon, is set to premiere on HBO Max in 2022. The series will focus on Aegon Targaryen conquering Westeros some 300 years before the events of the Game of Thrones series.
