The HBO series Game of Thrones debuted in 2011 and was a huge success. However, the story had caught up with its source material—the A Song of Ice and Fire book series by George R.R. Martin—by season five. The quality suffered as a result, and fans were disappointed by the final season’s conclusion. Meanwhile, attention has shifted back to Martin’s books which are still unfinished after more than a decade. The latest installment in his literary franchise, A Dance with Dragons, came out in 2011.
In a recent interview with Radio Times, George R.R. Martin opened up about the upcoming Game of Thrones book. The author said:
“It’s a big, big book, I’ve said that before. It’s probably gonna be a larger book than any of the previous volumes in the story. Dance with Dragons and Storm of Swords are the two largest books in the series, they were both about 1,500 manuscript pages. I think this one is going to be longer than that by the time I’m finished with it and I think I’m around three-quarters of the way done, maybe.”
Due to the length of time it takes to write, edit, and print a book, it is unlikely that George R. R. Martin’s The Winds of Winter will be available before late 2024 at the earliest.
House of the Dragon Season 1 is now premiering on HBO and HBO Max.
