The dragons in Game of Thrones might have wowed fans across the globe when they first appeared on screen… but it appears George RR Martin wasn’t as impressed.
Nonetheless, his main criticism of the creatures was rectified in the recently-released prequel series House of the Dragon, much to his delight.
Throughout the eight seasons of Game of Thrones, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) raised her baby dragons to become enormous beasts capable of destroying entire armies.
Given House of the Dragon tells the tale of her ancestors, when House Targaryen was still in its prime in King’s Landing, viewers were over the moon to be introduced to an array of new dragons from the get-go.
However, as George – the author of the books on which the franchise is based – pointed out, there was a major difference when comparing the beasts to those featured in the original show.
Speaking of the dragons in Game of Thrones, he remarked: ‘They were like all the same.’
The dragons in House of the Dragon, on the other hand, were not.
‘They had personality,’ the 74-year-old said, according to Deadline. ‘They came alive. It came as great satisfaction to me.’
Well, the writer has plenty more dragons to look forward to, as House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal revealed that there will be five new fire-breathers in season two.
In December last year, George shared a blog post online providing fans with an update on what he was up to, as he continues to chip away at The Winds of Winter, the sixth and eagerly-awaited novel in the series A Song of Ice and Fire.
He also revealed that several Game of Thrones spin-offs had been ‘shelved’, after they were impacted by the merger of HBO Max and Discovery.
‘Some of those are moving faster than others, as is always the case with development. None have been greenlit yet, though we are hoping… maybe soon,’ he wrote at the time.
‘A couple have been shelved, but I would not agree that they are dead. You can take something off the shelf as easily as you can put it on the shelf. All the changes at HBO Max have impacted us, certainly.’
George stressed to his fans that the world of Westeros is his ‘number one priority, and will remain so until the story is told’.
‘But Westeros has become bigger than The Winds Of Winter, or even A Song Of Ice And Fire,’ he added.
Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon are available to watch on Sky and NOW.
