Game of Thrones author George RR Martin has spoken about the impact the coronavirus pandemic has personally had on his life, revealing that he is hoping to have the Covid-19 vaccine soon.

In a new blog post titled ‘Reflections on a Bad Year’, Martin, 72, described 2020 as ‘probably the worst year I have ever lived through, for the country and the world if not me personally’.

Noting that there is a ‘glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel’ despite the fact that the ‘worst of the pandemic may be yet to come’, the writer said that while he waits for his turn to have the vaccine administered, he will ‘continue to go masked and quarantine myself as much as possible’.

He also expressed his sadness over losing several people in his life, admitting that he suspects he may experience ‘more losses’ in the future.

‘Personally… well, I lost a number of friends, some very near and dear to me,’ he said.

‘I have several other friends who are in failing health, so I fear that there may be more losses to come.’

Martin stated that while he and his partner Parris McBride are ‘as well as might be expected’, in his opinion, ‘growing old sucks’.

In the blog post, the author provided Game of Thrones fans with some hope as to when they might expect the sequel Winds of Winter to be completed.

He explained: ‘Hundreds of more pages to write to bring the novel to a satisfactory conclusion,’ which he is aiming for this year.

In the same essay, he also shared his disdain for former US President Donald Trump, describing his failure to be re-elected as ‘far and away the best thing to come out of 2020’.

In October last year, Martin revealed that he was originally set to make a cameo appearance in Game of Thrones when it first went into production.

However, when the HBO pilot was reshot, his cameo didn’t make the cut.

‘We shot the wedding of Daenerys Targaryen and Khal Drogo in Morocco,’ he revealed on his blog.

‘Ian McNeice played Illyrio Mopatis, a magister of Pentos, and I played one of the wedding guests, presumably another magister. Both of us, alas, were left on the cutting room floor when Dany was recast and the wedding was reshot.’

Game Of Thrones is available to stream on HBO, NOWTV and Sky.
