It’s sad to say, but Game of Thrones season eight is largely regarded as a major disappointment by fans, but author George RR Martin won’t be swayed into changing the story in The Winds of Winter.

The author has also addressed the ‘pressure’ he feels on making the highly anticipated new book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series as good as it can be.

‘I want to write the book I’ve always intended to write all along. And when it comes out they can like it or they can not like it,’ he told Entertainment Weekly.

On the final season, he admitted it has been strange watching the show while still writing The Winds of Winter.

‘The whole last three years have been strange since the show got ahead of the books,’ he said.

‘Yes, I told [showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss] a number of things years ago. And some of them they did do.

‘But at the same time, it’s different. I have very fixed ideas in my head as I’m writing The Winds of Winter and beyond that in terms of where things are going.

‘It’s like two alternate realities existing side by side.’

He added: ‘I have to double down and do my version of it which is what I’ve been doing.’

Meanwhile, Martin recently confirmed that the Game of Thrones prequel series, Bloodmoon, will contain some familiar ASOIAF elements like Starks and direwolves.

Game of Thrones season 8 is streaming on NOW TV.
