Last year, The Umbrella Academy was a quirky sleepy hit for Netflix, an offbeat dramady about the an extremely dysfunctional family of superheroes, or at least, superheroes is what their “father,” Sir Reginald Hargreeves, wanted them to be. The first season picks up with them as they reunite following Reginald’s death. Some have kept up the superheroics, some have traded it in for more ordinary lives, and one — Number Five (Aidan Gallagher) — accidentally used his powers of teleportation to travel into a post-apocalyptic future, and eventually came back to try and prevent whatever had destroyed the world.
Also he fell in love with a mannequin. I told you it was quirky.
The first season ended with the Hargreeves kids failing to stop the apocalypse, and Number Five teleporting the lot of them through time and space to try and give preventing it a second go. Now, Netflix has released first-look photos at the second season, and we see where they ended up: the 1960s!
Specifically, they’re in Dallas, where the second arc of Gerard Way’s Umbrella Academy comic book is set. (Gerard Way, FYI, is also the lead singer of emo rock band My Chemical Romance; I didn’t see that coming.) As you can see in the pics above, they eventually find each other, but first they spend some time apart, since Number Five’s powers are not 100% reliable and they all arrive at slightly different times. Number Five arrives last, and finds out that yet another apocalypse is coming, and that it’s once again up to the Hargreeves family to try and stop it. They can’t catch a break, these people.
Also it looks like Number Five isn’t quite over his mannequin thing:
We’ve also got Luther Hargreeves (Tom Hopper), concealing his great superheroic bulk under layers of clothing, as per usual:
Vanya Hargreeves (Ellen Page), the most unpredictable of the Hargreeves children, make a new friend:
She also looks to be tapping into some of her power, which could be very good or extremely bad, considering what happened last time she let loose:
Allison Hargreeves (Emmy Raver-Lampman) can control people using a special code phrase. She was trying to give up using her powers back in the present, but you know what they say about desperate times.
Diego (David Castañeda) was one of the Hargreeves kids who kept living the superhero life, becoming a kind of Batman-esque vigilante. I don’t know if he’s still doing that in season 2, but my god his hair:
And then there’s Klaus Hargreeves (Robert Sheehan), who can talk to the dead, and even call on their help. I have no idea what he’s doing in this photo, but it looks like something Klaus would do:
Ben Hargreeves (Justin H. Min) has been dead for years, but Klaus, at least, is still in contact with him.
Should Ben be worried about that guy on the ceiling behind him? Does he really have to fear anything as a spirit, or whatever he is?
We’ve also got some new characters coming in season 2, including a trio of Swedish assassins played by Tom Sinclair, Kris Holden-Ried and Jason Bryden:
If that seems random, it’s just this show’s speed.
One more group shot for the road:
And yes, the internet has noticed that Klaus and Diego basically have the same haircut now. Oh the bonding they’ll do!
