Arya and Sansa Stark, Cersei Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen and, of course, Brienne of Tarth. Over the years, the women of Game Of Thrones have taken centre stage and developed into complex characters.

Now Gwendoline Christie, who plays Brienne, has explained the reason behind the amount of strong female characters and it’s all down the the GOT fandom.

Speaking to Variety at the season 8 premiere in New York, the actor said thanks to the internet, the creators of the show were able to hear what fans want, ‘and what they want are more female characters, and they want more complex female characters’.

She said: ‘Something I’m deeply proud of in this show is that it has honoured the books, it has taken the characters that are so exquisitely drawn and described in the books, and maintained that and kept it in the TV show.

‘And I think that this huge phenomenon that is Game of Thrones has illustrated that people want to see female characters, they’re interested in those stories. And it has provided some really exceptional female characters.’

As with all the other GOT actors, Gwendoline has kept her cards close to her chest and revealed absolutely nothing about the end of season 8.

However, she did tell Good Morning America that reading the scripts for the finale episode left her ‘deeply startled’.

‘I had to put them down,’ she said of the pages revealing what happens in the end. ‘I was sort of walking around. I had to go out for a walk. It was a really extraordinary experience, and I realised they had pulled out all the stops for this one.’

Excitement for the final series of Game Of Thrones is now at fever pitch, with less than a week to go until the first episode hits screens.

But since there have only been three episodes in the whole seven series to not have included a death – as well as Gwendonline’s warning – the final series does not bode well for any of our favourite characters.
