Game of Thrones is the most awarded show in television history. The show set a record for winning the highest number of Primetime Emmy Awards for a series in a single year in 2015, winning 12 out of 24 nominations. Till date no other show has come close to that record.

The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards were held on 20th September 2020. The ceremony was organized virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Canadian sitcom Schitt’s Creek became the first comedy series to win all seven major awards in a single year. The comedy series won the most number of awards for the year 2020.

Emmys

Schitt’s Creek’s Dan Levy became the first person to win an award in all four major disciplines in a single year. He acted as the producer, actor, director, and writer for the series. The HBO drama Succession and limited series Watchmen won four awards each.

Zendaya became the youngest actress to win an Emmy in the Best Actress in the Drama Series category for HBO’s Euphoria. HBO led the list of networks with most wins, 30. Netflix was second with 21.

In a post-Emmy interview with Deadline, HBO President Casey Bloys said he was thrilled with the results. He said, “It’s especially nice because there was a question how HBO would do. This is a pretty good way to answer that question.”

He also confirmed the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is scheduled for release in 2022. Therefore the year 2022 might see a return of the Game of Thrones franchise back in Emmy contention. Game of Thrones has won 59 Emmy awards and 160 nominations since 2011.
