A while back, HBO announced the Game of Thrones Official Fan Convention, an event dedicated to all things Westeros. The shindig was to go down on in Las Vegas on February 18-20. They even announced some of the special guests who were going to attend, including Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy), Jack Gleeson (Joffrey Baratheon), and the Protector of the Realm himself, Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark).
But that’s all going to have to wait a while. HBO has updated the official convention website to announce that the event has been delayed. A new date and venue have yet to be announced, and folks who already bought tickets have been contacted about next steps.
I take it I don’t have to explain why the convention is being delayed? It rhymes with “brandemic” and “gromicron.” It’s been hard to hold big gatherings like this for two years now, and with a new wave washing over the world, it’s not getting easier. All we can do is mask up, social distance, vaccinate and solider on.
How does this affect House of the Dragon?
As we speak, HBO is hard at work on House of the Dragon, its follow-up to Game of Thrones. The prequel series is due out this year, and I’ve long suspected that the network wanted to use the convention to drum up hype for the new show. Perhaps we’d see a trailer there?
Well, obviously that’s not going to happen now, but I don’t think it will affect the release date for House of the Dragon, which has been in production for quite a while now. Maybe the convention can be pushed back to coincide with the premiere or something.
