HBO ‘House Of The Dragon’ is a new prequel series coming to HBO, January 12. Game of Thrones became a worldwide phenomenon upon release. In April of 2011, everyone became aware of it. The first season brought in enormous ratings and fans of the novels. For new fans, it brought George R.R. Martin a fresh wave of income as waves of new sales came in.
It all came to a culmination this past year, with the final episode airing May 19, 2019. The final episode and season were met with mixed reviews. It felt like it had been rushed and with such great set up throughout the first seasons, fans felt like they left a lot out. However, it now looks as though not only will HBO get a chance at redemption, but fans will get to live in Westeros a bit longer! HBO released a video on its YouTube page this month teasing a possible return.
‘House Of The Dragon’ – How Long Before Are We Talking?
House of the Dragon will be based on material from the novel “Fire & Blood,” which was also sourced for Game of Thrones as well. However, these stories take place in the House Targaryen set 300 years before the events of the ‘Game of Thrones’ HBO series. This means that we will not be seeing any carryover from the Game of Throne series. This will introduce all-new characters and actors. Whether you’re excited about this show or not, introducing a new story and characters to an existing audience is always a tough sell!
George R.R. Martin’s Contribution
Aside from obviously having written the novels, and letting us enjoy the fruits of his labor now, George R. R. Martin wants to have a part in the creation of the show. Perhaps even scriptwriting? He had done quite a bit for the first four seasons of Game of Thrones and would like to be back in the room.
According to IMDB trivia, on a personal blog, George R.R. Martin stated: “I expect to be involved in [House of the Dragons] to some extent…and, who knows, if things work out, I may even be able to script a few episodes, as I did for the first four seasons of GAME OF THRONES. But… let me make this perfectly clear… I am not taking on any scripts until I have finished and delivered WINDS OF WINTER. Winter is still coming, and WINDS remains my priority, as much as I’d love to write an episode of HOUSE.” Whatever happens, it seems that House of the Dragon will likely be a success. The draw is just too large and having Martin back in the writing room would be a huge bolster for the show.
