HBO has greenlit a pilot for the highly-anticipated Game of Thrones prequel series. According to Entertainment Weekly, writer Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Secret Service, X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass) along with George R.R. Martin will be the one tasked with bringing this huge and extremely ambitious project to life.
HBO released a description of the story for the still-untitled prequel series:
Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend … it’s not the story we think we know.
In Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels, the Age of Heroes begins with peace between the First Men and the Children of the Forest, and it ended when the Andals invaded Westeros. Many of the great Houses in Westeros can trace their origins back to the heroes of this age: Bran the Builder for House Stark and Lann the Clever for House Lannister.
Other notable heroes include Garth Greenhand of House Gardner, the Grey King (House Greyjoy) from the Iron Islands, Durran from House Durrandon (Storm’s End — the seat of House Baratheon), and Symeon Star-Eyes a legendary knight.
The Long Night also took place during the Age of Heroes, meaning we might see why the White Walkers decided to fight back against their creators the Children of the Forest and attacked the realms of men.
Again, the series has yet to receive a title, and it likely won’t’ premier until 2020 at the earliest, since HBO has stated it wants to wait a year after the end of Game of Thrones. It is important to note that this is a pilot order only, not a full series, but if the series does get ordered, then Goldman will serve as its showrunner.
