Succession, HBO’s drama about the obscenely rich Roy family and its struggles with regime change, is in its third season. It’s currently the best thing on TV, so naturally I want more. And HBO is happy to oblige: Variety reports that the network has renewed the drama for a fourth season.
Of course, this was all but inevitable. On top of being really really good, the show has picked up a boatload of Emmys, including Outstanding Drama for its second season. And the ratings for the third season premiere were the highest for the show yet: 1.4 million viewers across HBO’s platforms. That’s the best debut and HBO show has had since HBO Max launched in 2020. And that number will only grow as the week goes on; episodes in season 2 average five million viewers.
Will Succession end with season 4?
Succession creator Jesse Armstrong is staying mum on when the show might come to a close, although he does have an ending in mind. “All I know is there’s a promise in the ‘Succession’ title, and it can’t go on forever,” he said.
It’s important for me, I think, as a showrunner to have a pitch for my fellow collaborators, especially the writers. But it’s not immutable. That’s up for discussion. But I do have a pitch for how I think it goes.
That said, star Brian Cox (Logan Roy) hasn’t been quite as cagey. “I would say possibly two more series and then I think we’re done,” he said the other day. “But it just depends and may just be only one more series. It depends what the writers feel. I know they’ve got an endgame. They haven’t told us what the ending is, but there is an endgame. So it’s just how they get up to that endgame, whether it takes one series or two series. I think it’s going to be hard to let go of it this early. I think it needs a couple more series before it really comes to a culmination. That’s my feeling. Because its iconic nature is just hitting, I think people are going to want two more series, but they may only get one.”
So there you go, we’re probably at the middle point of the series right about now. Let’s enjoy it while it lasts. Good thing they make it easy.
