Viewers have yet to see any high-risk action scenes in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is only two episodes in. That, however, did not prevent Dexter Sol Ansell and Peter Claffey from getting into an on-set accident while filming a scene for episode 2. In an interview with TV Insider, Ansel and Claffey recounted how the take with the accident made the final cut.

Quick read:

  • Dexter Sol Ansell bonked his eye on Peter Claffey’s nose.
  • The take with the accident ended up in episode 2.
  • Ansell and Claffey met George R.R. Martin shortly after the accident.

On-set accidents are not uncommon during filming. However, in this case, the take in which Ansell had one ironically made it into the episode’s final cut. Lyonel Baratheon (Daniel Ings) had insisted that Dunk participate in a tug of war. Egg had also partaken in it. When they won, Dunk threw Egg high up in the air in celebration.

Ansell recalled, “Our team won the tug of war, and Pete, Dunk kept throwing me up in the air and then catching me. And one time, he threw me so high that my eye hit his nose. So I felt like my eye was inside of my brain. I was just like, ‘Ah!’” Ansell teases. “And then my mom comes on, and she’s like, ‘George is here!’ And then she goes like, ‘Oh! Are you OK?! What happened?’ And then it’s like a thing. And then they actually ended up using that one.”

Then, Claffey said that right after that, Lyonel crashed into Dunk and Egg, smashing Ansell in the back. The former rugby player had run “off set” after that.

Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell loved meeting George R.R. Martin

George R.R. Martin’s novella series serves as the source material for A Knight of the Seven KingdomsAnsell and Claffey met the author on the same day as they had the accident. Claffey stated that Martin was happy with with the show.

Ansell added, “What was amazing is he literally told me that my acting and how I looked was literally like I jumped off the page, which was very special.” The prequel series has already been renewed for a second season so fans will get to see more of Dunk and Egg’s adventures and learn about the behind-the-scenes chaos.
