From a creative standpoint, the shorter episode length feels like a wise call rather than a cost-cutting shortcut. While House of the Dragon reportedly hovered around $20 million per episode in its first season, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms comes in closer to $10 million per episode, but the difference shows up more in scope than in ambition.

The Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas stay tightly bound to Duncan’s viewpoint. Each story is a self-contained chapter in his journey, none stretching beyond 200 pages. That structure naturally lends itself to brisk episodes that value momentum over padding. Expanding the season to ten episodes, as seen with other prestige shows, could have dulled the edge that makes The Hedge Knight so effective on the page.

It also avoids repeating past missteps. Martin has already been vocal about his frustration with deviations in House of the Dragon, so fidelity matters here. And by all accounts, this adaptation sticks close to home.

With its half-hour format and weekly release, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms looks ready to trade excess for precision. That choice could make it the most faithful George R. R. Martin adaptation yet, and sometimes less really is more.
