Just days ago, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss confirmed they were “regretfully” walking away from their planned Star Wars trilogy – now, talk of what could have been has already begun.
Despite a multi-million pound deal with Disney’s Lucasfilm, and visions of creating a new era within the Star Wars series, Benioff and Weiss have turned their attention away from the galaxy towards Netflix.
According to a report in Variety, those infamous ‘creative differences’ were as ever partly to blame, with Lucasfilm apparently wary of the pair’s Star Wars ambitions, which had hoped to take the franchise away from the Skywalker saga.

It’s reported that Benioff and Weiss were interested in an origin story of-sorts (sound familiar?) and had pitched a trilogy that explored the origins of the Jedi. Patience, young Padawans, is still needed.
In a statement earlier this week, Thrones‘ Benioff and Weiss admitted their concerns over juggling two high-profile, big-bucks projects at Disney and Netflix.

“We love Star Wars,” they said. “When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything.
“There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects. So we are regretfully stepping away.”
At least we have Episode IX to look forward to.
Speaking of which, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has a release date of Thursday, December 19 in the UK and Friday, December 20 in the US.
