8. The Wall – Hadrian’s Wall
The geography of Westeros is very similar to the real-life map of Western Europe, with many people noting how the land looks like England with Ireland attached beneath. The famed wall to the North is very reminiscent of a real wall that was built by the Romans back in the year 122 AD.
Known as Hadrian’s wall, it was built during the rule of the emperor Hadrian, and stretched across the northern neck of England between the River Tyne next to the North sea to the Solway Firth on the Irish sea. Similar to its necessity in Game of Thrones to keep the wildlings out of the seven kingdoms, Hadrian’s wall was built to keep the Scottish barbarians from causing problems in the civilized world. While Westeros’ wall is over 300 miles long and 700 feet tall, the wall it was based on is far more modest- stretching for about 73 miles and raising up to 20 feet high, but of course, it was still a long time ago! Both feature regular encampments along them to serve as bases for troops.
Hadrian’s wall has since fallen into disrepair, and is mostly gone now apart from a few preserved areas. It was declared a World Heritage site in 1987, and is a popular destination for tourists who want to take advantage of the walking routes along the route of the former structure. And if you want to pretend you are in Game of Thrones!
7. Starks and Lannisters – The Yorks and Lancasters
Game of Thrones has become one of the most popular shows in the world because of its portrayal of political intrigue and the war between the Starks and the Lannisters. This jostling for the throne of the land bears striking similarities to the war between two English families for control of the kingdom between 1455 and 1487.
The Yorks and the Lancasters both had legitimate claims to rule, and in the aftermath of the that had left King Henry VI in a weakened position, they over who should take control. The emblem of the Yorks was a white rose, and the Lancasters a red rose, which led to this period being known as the the Roses. In events very similar to those depicted in Game of Thrones, the two factions fought in numerous conflicts over 30 years. This culminated in the battle of Bosworth field where the Lancaster’s came out victorious and their leader, Henry Tudor, was crowned as King Henry VII. The was equal to that on the show. While there were no dragons or zombies, events like those at the battle of Towton in 1461, were some of the most in history. Archaeologists are still to this day finding the remains of on the site.
6. Daenerys – Henry Tudor
It’s not just the setting and general themes of the show that mirror historical events, but some of the characters too- most notably Game of Thrones’ most powerful figure, Daenerys.
As the woman thought to be the sole Targaryen heir to the iron throne, her story is rather similar to that of Henry Tudor, the eventual victor of the. Henry had a claim to the throne because of his mother’s Lancastrian bloodline, but at the time he became next in line he was only 14 years old and living in exile in France in fear for his life. Living just across the narrow sea, or in this case the English channel, Henry’s enemies would have taken any opportunity to him. His lack of funds and perceived inability to put together an army meant that he was by no means a top priority for Edward IV who was focused on quelling rebellions, and Henry was able to plot his return.
Eventually the time was right and he returned to take his rightful place- if this really is the inspiration behind the story of Daenerys perhaps this could be a foreshadowing of how the entire Game of Thrones story will come to an end.
5. Wild fire – Greek Fire
One of the most visually stunning effects in Game of Thrones came at the end of the second season during the attack on King’s Landing when Tyrion comes to the rescue with his use of wildfire. The green, highly volatile, liquid violently explodes and burns even when on water. Amazingly this is all based on real world events!
