Hopefully this video was straight to the point. If you like this concept please let us know and we will test many more old warhorses from the late 1800s and beyond. I was very surprised at the penetrating capabilities of the Minie ball. The wounds that they caused were devastating and they changed the face of warfare forever. If you got hit in the arm or leg you were likely going to lose your limb.

  1. While the Minie Ball caused terrible casualties, it was less than half the problem. How much less effective would it have been IF only smooth bore weapons had been available? OR the continued use of outmoded tactics, while the opposition had weapons that were far more accurate than anything previously used in large numbers? Understand, .69 and .75 caliber round balls from Muskets also caused horrific wounds, but there were less of them due to weapon limitations. What is certainly more unbelievable is similar tactics were still used 52 years LATER in WWI against MACHINE GUNS ,and EVEN BETTER ARTILLERY!!!

  2. I've watched this video about a million times but I have to say him saying the effective range of smoothbore was at 2-300 is a bit exaggerated, I've fired a ton of smoothbore with round shot , and you are damn good if you can hit accurate at 150 let alone 2-300 hundred. Maybe I'm just a bad shot

  3. The tactics used in the Civil War when such a revolutionary weapon such as the Minie' Ball were what made it so deadly…At the beginning of the war Gen. Robert E. Lee was called "Granny Lee" or "The King of Spades" because he had the men he was in charge of building trench works..By the end of the war at Petersburg they were thanking their lucky stars General Lee understood modern war and had learned his lesson at Pickett's Charge. Modern weapons require modern tactics….

By 1864 Gen. Lee was fighting a war that would take place almost 50 years after his death in Europe..THAT is why he is so honored in the USA…He was a military genius…

  4. Cap and Ball on youtube did a Ballistic gel test with cloth face using a reduced charge to simulate long range bullet strikes at 100 meters. He was judging whether the Minie or the Lorenz was better.
His tests show the Lorenz had better penetration.
None of his lead bullets expanded more than a little flat.
I've shot my 20 ga shotgun slugs and my .54 caliber BP rifle and the effects are quite similar.
No one disputes their lethality for sure it's a fact.

  5. Thanks guys for your wonderful videos. I too love to shoot the. 58 minnie balls & agree that they are most devestating. BUT more awesome than the minnie ball loaded front wards is one that is loaded backwards with the hollow base pointing to the front like a "hollow point"! Whoa mamma! Of course getting hit with the butt end of one of these guns could kill ya too. It can sure kill my shoulder too! !!
