Paddy Considine has found the perfect way to mark joining the cast of House of the Dragon.
The actor has been cast as King Viserys Targaryen in the upcoming Game Of Thrones prequel.
After HBO announced the news on Tuesday, Paddy posted a close-up of the iconic Iron Throne from the fantasy series – which is made from numerous rusty swords – on his Instagram page.
He only added an emoji of a lightning bolt in the caption, and while it could just be Paddy’s way of celebrating, the lightning bolt is the symbol of House Dondarrion in the books. Historically the Dondarrions and the Targaryens have been allies.
HBO confirmed the news on social media, saying: ‘Paddy Considine has been cast as King Viserys Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon!
‘OFFICIAL CHARACTER SYNOPSIS: “King Viserys Targaryen is chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen, at the Great Council at Harrenhal. ‘A warm, kind, and decent man, Viserys only wishes to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy. But good men do not necessarily make for great kings.”’
One of the UK’s best character actors, he has starred in BBC series Peaky Blinders as Father John Hughes, Sky drama The Third Day and HBO’s The Outsider.
His film roles include Pride, The World’s End and How To Build A Girl.
While the rest of the cast begins to take shape, recent reports have claimed Vikings actor Travis Fimmel is set to play King Viserys’ younger brother Prince Daemon.
It comes after HBO previously scrapped prequel Bloodmoon, despite already casting Naomi Watts and John Simm in lead roles and filming on the first episode taking place in Northern Ireland.
Game Of Thrones ended last year after eight seasons.
House of the Dragon is expected to arrive on HBO in 2022.
