Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon has confirmed its first star in Peaky Blinder actor Paddy Considine as casting finally begins to shape up.
Following the sudden axe of a Naomi Watts-led Game of Thrones spin-off, HBO announced an entirely different series following the Targaryen origins story would take its place.
We know it’s coming in 2020, and that’s been about all the news we could give you – until now.
Confirming the news, HBO wrote alongside a photo of Paddy on the House of the Dragon Instagram page: ‘Paddy Considine has been cast as King Viserys Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon!
‘OFFICIAL CHARACTER SYNOPSIS: “King Viserys Targaryen is chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen, at the Great Council at Harrenhal.
‘A warm, kind, and decent man, Viserys only wishes to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy. But good men do not necessarily make for great kings.”’
Paddy was most recently seen in Sky series The Third Day, HBO’s The Outsider, and Caitlyn Moran biopic, How To Build A Girl. To many, he is best known for his appearance in Peaky Blinders as Father John Hughes.
Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik, hailed for creating some of the fantasy epic’s most extravagant sequences including The Long Night and The Battle of The Bastards, will return to the franchise as both director and co-showrunner.
Paddy’s announcement rules out a popular rumour Vikings star Travis Fimmel scooped the role of King Viserys Targaryen, which was already being celebrated by fans.
According to HBO boss Casey Bloys, House of The Dragon is still expected to arrive in 2022 with further casting announcements expected to follow shortly as he confirmed auditions, meetings and screen tests were well underway.
