Warning: spoilers ahead for the House of the Dragon episode 10 finale.

The House of the Dragon season 1 finale has sparked huge levels of excitement for season 2, as war looks set to break out between the two separate sides of the family led by Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) and Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke).

In episode 10, Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) pays a visit to an old dragon residing at Dragonstone, singing to the creature in High Valyrian after pointing out to his wife Rhaenyra that there are several dragons in Westeros who are currently unclaimed by riders.

While some fans may be wondering who this dragon is, the beast’s identity has been revealed – and it is of great importance when looking back throughout the history of House Targaryen and beyond.

Here’s what you need to know.

What dragon does Daemon sing to?

The dragon that Daemon sings to in House of the Dragon episode 10 not only has strong historical significance, but it will also be of great importance in the remainder of the tale to come.

In the finale, during a meeting of Queen Rhaenyra’s council, the group are listing off the dragons that the Greens have in comparison to the Blacks ahead of inevitable war when Daemon makes a vital observation.

In addition to dragons in Westeros that have been claimed – such as Aemond’s dragon Vhagar and Rhaenyra’s dragon Syrax – there are also several dragons that do not have riders.

One of these dragons is a creature called Vermithor, which the official Twitter account for the HBO series confirmed is the dragon that Daemon pays a visit to in the final episode of the season in the caverns of Dragonmont on Dragonstone, which is situated under an active volcano.

Not only is this dragon currently unclaimed at this point of the story, but he also used to be the dragon flown by King Jaehaerys Targaryen, who was the king before Rhaenyra’s father, Viserys.

Vermithor is known as the Bronze Fury due to his bronze wings, and by the time of the Dance of the Dragons war, is around a century old.

While it’s understood that Vhagar is the largest dragon in the land, Vermithor is the second biggest – so could play a crucial role in future battles if he is claimed by a new rider.

Who ends up flying Vermithor in the Dance of the Dragons? *Book spoilers ahead*

You have been warned – if you wish to avoid Fire & Blood book spoilers that could come to pass in the series, look away now.

In Fire & Blood, just like in House of the Dragon, Vermithor has remained riderless throughout the reign of Viserys following the death of King Jaehaerys.

At the beginning of the Dance of the Dragons war, when various individuals start attempting to claim more dragons ahead of the war between the Greens and the Blacks, Vermithor eventually gains a new rider – a man named Hugh Hammer, the illegitimate son of a blacksmith.

We won’t go into any further detail – except to say that you should keep a close eye on where Vermithor’s story will lead.

House of the Dragon is available to watch on Sky Atlantic and NOW.
