Game of Thrones fans familiar with George RR Martin’s writing might already have an inkling of how irksome Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) will be in upcoming prequel House of the Dragon.
However, the former Doctor Who actor has warned just how much Daemon, the younger brother of the King, will get on people’s nerves… and it sounds like he’s going to be a complete agent of chaos.
House of the Dragon, which premieres this month, is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, placing a spotlight on House Targaryen when it was in power across the Seven Kingdoms and boasted several powerful dragons in its arsenal.
Matt, 39, plays Daemon, who’s next in line to the throne, despite the fact that his older brother King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine) has a child, his daughter Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) who wants the Iron Throne for herself.
In a new interview, the Morbius star teased what viewers can expect from his peroxide blonde-haired prince, telling Empire magazine: ‘Daemon is there to cause chaos and p*** people off because, simply, it entertains him.’
Not only could there be a rivalry between Daemon and Rhaenyra, but it sounds like Daemon is also going to have quite an intense political contest with Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), the Hand of the King.
‘[Daemon] and Otto loathe one another,’ he shared.
‘They’re winding each other up, needling one another. And in the middle of it is Paddy, who plays Viserys. They’re both vying for his attention and his love.’
Notting Hill star Rhys, 55, stressed how much of a gameplayer Otto can be, describing him as a ‘high-flying political creature, a black belt in statecraft, a pragmatist and a manipulator’.
This could play into Otto’s favour, particularly when trying to sway King Viserys towards his own desires.
‘[Daemon is] volatile, violent and impulsive. Any influence he has on the king is detrimental to the status quo,’ Rhys warned.
We can’t wait for this new fiery game of thrones to begin!
House Of The Dragon premieres on August 22 on Sky Atlantic and NOW.
